1. Don’t Choose for Them — Guide Them.
Your child needs your wisdom, but not your decisions. Help them explore, not just follow. The career they enjoy is the one they’ll stick with and thrive in.
2. Passion Is Not Enough.
Passion matters — but guide them to match their interests with skills, academic strengths, and real-world opportunities. That’s how dreams become sustainable.
3. The Job Market Has Changed.
Many high-paying careers today didn’t exist 10 years ago. Expose your child to modern options like tech, health innovation, entrepreneurship, and the creative industry.
4. Talk About Careers Early — Not After WASSCE.
The earlier your child gets career guidance, the better they can align their subject choices, extracurriculars, and goals.
5. Support Exploration — Not Just Grades.
Good grades are great. But ask them what they enjoy, what they’re curious about, and who they admire. Those questions often reveal career direction.
6. Ask, “What Problem Do You Want to Solve?”
This simple question can uncover powerful purpose. The best careers solve problems the child genuinely cares about.
7. Help Them Learn About Themselves.
Encourage personality quizzes, mentorship programs, and exposure to different professions. Self-awareness is the foundation of wise career choices.
8. Avoid Career Comparison.
Every child is unique. Don’t compare your child’s career interest to a sibling, cousin, or “that neighbor’s child.” It only creates anxiety and confusion.Most Ghanaian parents are fond of that.
9. Be Their First Career Coach.
Ask guiding questions like:
• “What excites you?”
• “What subjects feel natural to you?”
• “What kind of life do you want in 10 years?”
10. Partner With Professionals.
